How are non-toxic makeups

How are non-toxic makeups

A good makeup made with vegetable oils and mineral pigments not only adds color to the skin without irritating it but also nourishes and protects it. Do you know the alternatives?

Putting on makeup is a ritual that many women carry out every morning and sometimes at night to hide skin imperfections and highlight the features that favor them. But with what are these products made? Are they toxic?

In a conventional eyeshadow, for example, you can find aluminum powder and, in a lipstick, substances derived from petroleum. This is not unimportant: the skin absorbs some of these ingredients through the pores. And some of the products that are applied to the lips can end up on the stomach.

Choosing more natural makeup helps to avoid irritation and reduce the toxic load borne by the skin and the body. And whether you like a simple style or if you prefer striking, today the offer is very wide.

Natural makeup is no longer what it was 5 or 10 years ago. In the last decade, many lines have been developed, some even organic, offering quality and attractive colors. These products use pigments and vegetable oils, as well as minerals that give color.

Together with the pioneering companies in natural cosmetics, conventional and established brands are beginning to eliminate toxins from makeup and also opt for natural ingredients that, in many cases, offer better results.

It is not always possible to know if a makeup is very natural, as many do not list the ingredients. But things are changing.

Thank you for watching

The European Union is leading the ban on several carcinogenic ingredients in cosmetics and some large European brands are already looking for alternatives to synthetic preservatives.

In addition, various associations give the consumer confidence that the product is truly natural. Among the most important certifications are:

  • The German BDIH seal certifies that the product is made with organic plant ingredients where possible, that it has not been tested on animals, that it does not contain ingredients of vertebrate animal origin, synthetic or petroleum-based dyes or preservatives, and that it does not has been irradiated.
  • The French EcoCert seal indicates that the products have less than 5% synthetic ingredients and that, if they claim to be organic, at least 95% of the natural ingredients are.

These are some of the differences between natural and conventional cosmetic makeup products:

  • Make-up base, blush and eyeshadow. These products, in liquid or powder, are used to give color and usually contain aluminum powder, dyes and synthetic perfumes, as well as petroleum derivatives. More and more brands are using plant-based ingredients and mineral pigments with the same, or even better, results.
  • Eyeliner. Conventional pencils can contain aluminum powder, parabens, and BHT(butylhydroxytoluene or E-321). The most natural ones use vegetable oils, beeswax and natural pigments.
  • Eye mask. They can contain parabens and petroleum derivatives, and some organizations say they have found traces of lead in some brands. There are natural masks that include natural pigments, such as coffee, to achieve the desired color.
  • Lipstick and glitter. Perhaps this is where the quality of the ingredients must be stricter, since they are not only applied to the skin, but part of it is ingested. Conventional colors include petroleum derivatives and artificial colors. In natural products we find beeswax and coconut oil.

When removing make-up, it is possible to be applying an aggressive product to the skin again. Only the smell of some make-up removers is already irritating, some sting when applied and most dry out so much that immediately you have to go for the moisturizer so that your skin does not feel so tight.

There are better and easier ways to remove makeup, and they are natural:

  • Eyes. Eye makeup is usually oil or grease based, and the best way to dissolve one fat is with another. There are natural make-up removers made with vegetable oils, although you can also soak a cotton ball in almond oil and gently drag the mask, shadow and eyeliner. The skin is not only clean, but also hydrated.
  • Face. The same natural cleansing gel or milk used to wash your face will also easily remove makeup.

There are situations that require an elaborate makeup, but for day-to-day a natural and simple makeup is enough. Not only is it flattering, but it has the added bonus of knowing that chemicals are not being applied to the face unnecessarily.

  • Without base. If you eat well and are healthy, your skin is beautiful without using a foundation.
  • Brighten eyes and cheeks. To give a healthier appearance, you can apply a natural concealer in the dark circles area and mineral blush on the cheeks. The eyes can be highlighted with a soft shadow and a light layer of mascara on the lashes.
  • Moisturize the lips. It is finished with a lip balm without color but very hydrating that protects, gives shine and highlights the natural tone of the lips.
